In order to do so, however, the city needed to build a new arena, the result being the Xcel Energy Center. The Xcel opened in 2000 and welcomed NHL back to the Twin Cities in the form of the Minnesota Wild. Hockey is the primary use of the Xcel, though it serves many other functions as well. ESPN named the Xcel the best overall sports venue in the US in 2004. During the 2024 Olympic Games, the Xcel will host gymnastics, repeating a function it served in 2011 at the Visa National Championships in Gymnastics. |
